STURMANSKIE
chronograph Cushion Case Military Style, Reissue 2009.
Russian Federation/Germany.
History: The Soviets introduced a new chronograph caliber in 1976. Called the ОКЕАН, meaning Ocean, the watch was solely intended for use by the BMF, the naval branch of the military. Later, other official versions, such as the Sturmanskie, were introduced. Whether or not the 3133 was meant as a replacement for the Strela, it soon became clear that that was precisely what it was. Based on the Valjoux 7734 of which the soviets had purchased the machinery from the Swiss in 1974 to begin their own production of their new caliber. The new 31 mm movement was a less complex and more robust movement than the jewel-like 3017. A simple cam design replaced the earlier watches more complex, and costly to produce, column wheel activation. And for the first time in history a Russian chronograph was equipped with shock protection. At 38 mm wide and 12 mm high, with 18 mm sized lugs, the watch was equipped with unique crystal that protruded from the case a fairly steep 3 mm high. The watch came in both chrome plated and stainless steel cases. Stainless steel cases having stainless steel crowns and pushers and chrome cased watches chromed crowns and pushers. All early versions of the watch had a crown at nine that turned a bezel under that purposefully high crystal that had a second hour chapter ring printed on it, making keeping track of a second time zone effortless. Like the earlier Strela, many different versions of the 3133 made there way into space on various missions. The 3133 was for official-use only until 1983, when it became available to a larger public marketplace, including export varients. The 3133 is still in production today. A slight variation of the standard 3133 is the hacking 31659 caliber version Sturmanskie that was, like earlier Sturmanskies, an air force-only piece. The watch is essentially a standard 3133 that has been re-engineered with a small lever that applies pressure to the outside of the balance when the crown is pulled out, freezing the balance and hacking the watch. Interesting to note, in regard to this watch, is the lack of the rotating bezel and subsequently the crown at nine.Reference. Case: Cushion type, stainless steel. Dial: Black outer ring is adorned with the offwhite arabic hour numerals and a triangle at 12 o'clock. The dial has white on black minute chapter and gray centre. It has raised metal hour markers end with luminious dots. Hour and minute hands are made of metal with luminious inserts. Red centre stop seconds has an arrow end resemblimg a fighter-jet. Sub second hand is at 9 0'clock in navy blue, and sub stop minute hand is at 3 o'clock in red. Date window is placed at 6 o'clock. Above the date window the coat of arms of Soviet airforces is placed and on the upper part of the dial the inscription Штурманские (which stands for Navigator) is seen. Movement: Calibre 31659, is the last derivative of 3133 developed by USSR in the late 1980s which has a hack lever to stop the watch to make a correct setting. The movement features a 23 jewel, shock proof balance, 21600 bph, 48 hours power reserve. The maker of the movement is Maktime Moscow, which is the inheritor of the Poljot watch makers, and the rest of the watch -case, dial, hands etc.-is manufactured in Germany in a limited number recently. This watch commemorates the Штурманские aeronautical chronographs which was developed to be employed by the Soviet Air Forces and Space Programs. "Frogman" Diver's wrist watch, made in USSR, ca.1980s.
The Vostok Company was founded in 1942
when one of the
Moscow
watch-making plants of the
First Moscow Watch Factory
was evacuated to
Chistopol,
a small town located on the
Kama River
in
Tatarstan.[1]
Only defense equipment was produced during the war years, but
as soon as the war was over the company started making
mechanical wrist watches. However, the Company did not begin
using the "Vostok" brand name until the 1960s. *Presumable
"Vostok" brand was named after the
Vostok
space program, which gave the initial advancement of the
USSR in
the
Space race
(as some others soviet watch brands, named to space topics in
1960s -
Poljot
and
Raketa).The
company was appointed an official supplier of watches for the
Defense Department of the
Soviet Union
in 1965. This year also marks the creation of the well known
Komandirskie ("Commander's") watch. The experience
gained through development of the army watch led to the Amphibia,
a stainless-steel watch able to withstand a 200 meter depth
(20atm). By 1980, Vostok Watch Makers was producing 4.5
million timepieces per year. This watch is an Amphibia model
made by Vostok Watch Factory. It has a bilateral rotating
bezel. The golden brown dial has raised hour markers and date
at 3 o'clock and centre sweep second hand. Famous image of a
frogman and "vostok" logo is placed on the upper part of the
dial and "antimagnetic" while "21 jewels" inscriptions are
placed on the lower part. The case is stainless steel. The
movement is 2416 automatic with 21 jewels. The watch is

Precision
wrist watch, calibre 2809A, first half of 1960. It has
black dial. The dial has marked with arabic numerals at 12 and 6
o'oclock, and the rest of hours are marked with hour markers
(doubled at 9 and 3 o'clock). Arabic numerals and hour markers
are luminious . It has a longer red second hand which is a
center sweeping. This calibre has been produced between late
1950s to late 1960s and inspired by Zenith chronometre calibre
135. This movement was manufactured in Chistopolsky Watch
Factory. These movements were improved by making its jewel count
up to 22 (4 additional cap jewels in bearings of anchor and 4th
wheels) and breguet hairspring and bigger screwed balance wheel
to improve accuracy. And the factory tested movements for
accuracy, a similar test to COSC. Movements passed the tests
installed in Vostok and partly Volna brand cases and dialed with
these brand names. The Chistopolsky Watch Factory (ччз) changed
its name to Vostok (BOCTOK) in the early 1960s and employed "B"
for Vostok on the movements it produced from that date onwards.
Thus this watch has "B" symbol stamped on its back plate shows
that the watch was manufactured right after the company had
employed its new name : Vostok and the serial numbers inscribed
on the back plate indicates the factory after it's been re-named
began to put new serials on the movements it produced.
