Teapot, Early Republican Era, 1921. |
It is 14cm high and missing its lid. It depicts two ladies under a (plum?) blossomed tree, one of these ladies is seated and the other is standing and holding a vase with flowers. The quality of painting is fine. On the other half of the body of the teapot there is an inscription: a poem, a date and signature of painter The date is Xin You / 辛酉 (1921). The inscription is signed by Xu Yung Feng Zuo/徐永锋 (( Painted by Xu Yung Feng). There is a four character mark on the bottom which reads Xu Yung Feng Zao ( Made by Xu Yung Feng). In this case maker of the pot is the painter as well. This red four character mark is a factory mark. Often the factory was named after the factory owner. Many Porcelain factory owners were capable porcelain painters. They enjoyed painting too but took part in painting not so often because of business commitment. This teapot is a rare specimen showing the painting and calligraphy of a porcelain maker. Thanks a lot for Simon Ng for the information and deciphering.
